A business website has one job: turn a visitor into an enquiry. Design matters, but most websites lose visitors for simpler reasons. The message is unclear, the phone number is hidden, or the page loads slowly on a phone. Use this business website checklist to make sure yours does the basics well.

1. A clear message above the fold

Within a few seconds, a visitor should know what you do, who it is for and where you work. Use plain words, not slogans. "Dental clinic in Leeds, open on Saturdays" beats "Your smile, our passion".

2. Easy ways to get in touch

  • Phone number and email visible in the header or footer of every page.
  • A short contact form: name, contact details and a message are usually enough.
  • WhatsApp or chat if your customers use it.
  • Address, opening hours and a map for a physical business.

3. Fast on a phone

Most visitors arrive on a phone, often on a slow connection. Compress images, avoid heavy sliders and auto-playing videos, and test the site on a real mid-range phone, not only on a desktop.

4. SEO basics

  • A unique title and description for every page, with the words your customers search for.
  • One clear heading per page, and real text, not text inside images.
  • A sitemap submitted in Google Search Console.
  • A Google Business Profile for local businesses, with the same name, address and phone as the site.
  • Structured data, so search engines understand your business, products and reviews.

5. Trust signals

  • Real reviews, ideally with a link to where they can be checked.
  • Client logos, used with permission.
  • Photos of the real team and premises, not stock photos.
  • Registration details, years in business and memberships.

6. An admin panel you can use

Your prices, services, photos and news will change. If every change needs a developer, the site goes stale. A simple admin panel lets your team update content in minutes.

7. Security and maintenance

  • HTTPS on every page.
  • Regular updates and automatic backups.
  • Protection on forms against spam.
  • Cookie consent and a privacy policy where the law requires them.

8. Measure what works

Set up analytics, and track the actions that matter: form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks. Then improve the pages that bring enquiries, and fix the ones where visitors leave.

Templates that already tick the boxes

Most businesses do not need a website designed from scratch. We build business websites from industry-ready templates, with your branding, your content and an admin panel your team can use. They are mobile-friendly and SEO-ready, and they go live in one to two weeks. For example, City Tours & Travels runs on our travel agency template.
